Biography:

Patricia J. Gumport is a sociologist of higher education and professor in the Stanford Graduate School of Education for 30 years. She also serves as the director of the Stanford Institute for Higher Education Research (SIHER). Concurrently, she is a co-director of the Stanford Leadership Academy. She recently completed 13 years serving as Stanford’s first Vice Provost for Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs. Her research and teaching illuminate our understanding of key changes in the academic landscape and organizational character of American higher education. She has focused on the dynamics of academic change in several arenas—to illuminate what facilitates change and what impedes it—across and within different types of colleges and universities. Her newly-released book, Academic Fault Lines (2019), chronicles the rise of ‘industry logic’ in public higher education. She shows how administrative leaders and faculty have responded to changes in societal expectations for what higher education should be and do, and how they managed tensions in priority-setting. Her findings include insights for academic leaders to become more effective at strategizing, innovating, and collaborating, within dynamic contexts of shifting resources, stakeholder interests, and broader societal expectations.

Stanford Education/Awards:
She received her PhD and two master’s from Stanford University in the 1980s.
Her Stanford awards include
·         President’s Award for Advancing Institutional Excellence through Diversity Programs (2012)
